Abstract

The colonial system in Spanish Guinea progressively limited and even denied the rights of colonized groups. This was accomplished through restrictive legislation that placed them under the guardianship of the Patronato de Indígenas (“The Indigenous Board”), which was sketched out in a 1904 law but not given full form until 1928. The Patronato was responsible for regulating the emancipation system in the region. This mechanism placed most indigenous individuals under the guardianship of the state, treating them legally as minors, and ensuring their legal and social exclusion. This article analyzes the functioning and legislative developments of this mechanism of control and social coercion and addresses its impact on the colonized society.
