Keywords:
body, body modification, skin whitening, Equatorial GuineaAbstract
The body modification practice of skin whitening can be understood as a strategic resource for coping with social tensions arising from colorism, the ideol-ogy that privileges light-skinned people of color over their dark-skinned coun-terparts. For decades, skin whitening has been a very widespread practice in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly among women. In this article, which is centered in Equatoguinean society, I present data on “maquillaje”, the popular denomina-tion for the skin depigmentation practice in Equatorial Guinea.
