Abstract

This  article  presents  an  analysis  of  the  contributions  of  the  Anthropology  of  Tourism  in  Spain  to  problematize  the  controversial  debate  on  community  ba-sed tourism in Latin America. Among the multiplicity of tourism practices, commu-nity-based tourism, due to its special cha-racteristics,  it  has  been  used  as  a  strategy  for  local  development  and  has  entered  strongly in the political agenda of interna-tional  cooperation  from  the  implementa-tion  of  methodologies  Pro  Poor  Tourism  (PPT) and Sustainable Tourism for Elimi-nating Poverty (ST-EP). From the analysis of  specific  case  studies  in  Latin  America,  the  article  discusses  existing  debates  on  the benefits and limitations of this type of tourism.
