This paper is a preliminary analysis of the results of a research project on indigenous women migrants to the province of Panama. Domestic work is one of the occupations in which the greatest numbers of indigenous women are concentrated. The deficient working conditions they face are related to gender inequality and ethnic discrimination in the context of migration. We analyze this phenomenon in order to understand the potentialities of migration as a factor for change in ethnic and gender identities and, more precisely, its relation to the empowerment and autonomy of migrant indigenous women.
