This article reflects on fieldwork in China in places where diverse trajectories, paths, and multiple identities involved in the migration process intersect. Specifically, the article presents ethnographic work conducted in Qingtian (Zhejiang, People’s Republic of China), which is the region where most of the Chinese people in Spain come from, and where the meaning of migration and mobility as a way of life is condensed in paradigmatic form. Through a description of the ethnographic process and the methodological approaches used, this paper considers the role of mobility in the creation of identities and alterities, and their influence on ethnographic relationships. Finally, a discussion of the personal, academic and financial circumstances in which the research was carried out serves as the basis for reflection on the role of the ethnographer in the study of migration and mobility in the contemporary world.
