Abstract

Haiti's history has been marked both by the slave trade and slavery practices during the colonial era, and by resistance to these practices. The success of the great slave revolt (1791-1804) that led to the country's independence, is a unique case in history. During the time of slavery, but also during the wars for independence, maroons communities (rebel slaves) played an essential role. In contemporary Haiti, we find other groups that, like the maroons communities of yesteryear, make secrecy and concealment one of their main ways of existing and operating: they are secret societies. Feared, denigrated or deformed, but always present in the imaginary of society that we could call voodoo or traditional, secret societies have developed some essential functions for the balance of society.
