Challenges and Opportunities in Ethnographic Research: Reflections on Vulnerability and Activism

Abstract

This article aims to articulate the challenges and approaches encountered by the two authors during their first year of doctoral studies, providing insights and reflections grounded in both literature and personal experience. The main themes addressed include the relationship with study participants, the integration of emotions throughout the research process, and the connections between activism and academia.

The method used is an analysis of personal experience in fieldwork within conflict contexts and on topics related to gender-based violence. Personal reflections and experiences are combined with examples and debates raised by other authors, with whom a dialogue is established to enrich the article’s propositions.

In conclusion, the authors advocate for a feminist and decolonial anthropology focused on three aspects. First, one that considers the researcher’s social position and questions the dynamics established with participants. Second, one that includes emotions as part of the studied reality. Finally, one that constitutes an engaged anthropology, aiming to create impact and foster change within its context.
