Globalization and the patrimonialization of culture have specifically affected Amerindian peoples’ ritual expressions, which are subject to public exhibition, touristic promotion, and “valorization” of their expressive culture by actors and forces outside their communities. This article presents several cases in the Bolivian Andes in order to exemplify some of the effects that public exhibition may have on indigenous ritual celebrations through tourism or mass media broadcasting. This article highlights the difficulties and problems in the domain of ritual caused by UNESCO’s alleged valorization of intangible cultural heritage through its listing of world heritage sites.
